No Kaffarah required for neglecting `Iddah or Hidad out of ignorance
A:
Observing `Iddah is one of the obligations prescribed by Shari`ah (Islamic law) and the intention is not needed. `Iddah begins immediately after death or divorce has taken place. Furthermore, the wife whose husband dies must mourn and is sinful if she neglects this. No Kaffarah is required for neglecting mourning. Rather, this widow must perform Tawbah (repentance to Allah), ask Allah's Forgiveness, and increase her good deeds. Based on what is mentioned in the question, the term of this woman's `Iddah has ended. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions.
